Top 5 Social Moments of Glasgow 2014

Feature

It was billed as the "Friendly Games" but for some Glasgow 2014 will be remembered as the social games. From the first firework of the Opening Ceremony, Social media was buzzing and turned out to be one of the most exciting ways to track the Games. Here’s a handful of our favourite social moments.

We've picked out 5 of our favourites below.

Clyde hits our Vine Booth

Our Vine booth was a huge hit with the athletes at the Village. But arguably the star of the show was our loveable mascot Clyde, who took to the booth on its last night.

Royal photobombs became the 'thing'

The Queen started a trend on the night of the Opening Ceremony, photobombing a selfie with Australian athletes Jayde Taylor and Anna Flanagan. Grandsons William and Harry soon followed suit. Anything Gran can do, we can do better...!

Sir Chris Hoy comes to the rescue

We know the Queen's message inside the baton is supposed to be secure, but ours was maybe a bit too secure! Thankfully Glasgow 2014 ambassador, Sir Chris Hoy, came to Prince Imran of Malaysia's aid to help him open it.

The Hydro & Finnieston Crane lit up

To mark the success of Team Scotland's record-breaking athletes, two icons of the Glasgow skyline were illuminated - the SSE Hydro in Gold and the Finnieston Crane, a symbol of the city's industrial past, in blue.

We #PutChildrenFirst

As mentioned during the Opening Ceremony, Scotland is a countyr full of firsts - from Glasgow honouring Nelson Mandella to Scotland's Alexander Flemming's discovery of penicillin, we have offered the world a lot. On 23 July at the Opening Ceremony, we did it again. Glasgow 2014 was the first major sporting event to use the platform as a Commonwealth-wide fundraiser for children - raising almost £5 million for those most in need.
