Athletes’ Village
Designed for athletes in consultation with athletes,
the Commonwealth Games Athletes’ Village promises to be a true
“home from home” experience.
The location of the purpose-built village is in
Glasgow’s East End and is at the heart of one of Europe’s largest
regeneration areas. It will be capable of housing the expected
6,500 athletes and CGA team officials at Games time. The
International Zone will have an exclusive retail area, recreation
area, dining hall, medical facilities and other amenities for the
athletes and officials during the period of the Games.
The Athletes’ Village site will be developed by Glasgow
City Council, with City Legacy, a consortium selected as the
preferred development partner click to press release. City Legacy
is a private-sector consortium, and will build the first 700 units
for the Games. Following the Games, the Athletes’ Village
will be further developed to become an attractive residential area
comprising a total of 1,400 homes, 300 of which will be available
for social rental, as well as a care home for 120 residents. The
balance of the units will be for sale.
Through this development, the Glasgow City Council looks to
further bring social and economic value and regeneration to
this area by creating employment and training opportunities as well
as offering opportunities to local businesses and social
enterprises.
Preparatory land remediation work commenced on the 35-hectare
site in August 2009. The Athletes’ Village will be
completed in January 2014 when the Games time overlay will be
started.
