Glasgow is proud to be representing the whole nation with the Games in 2014. Scotland, with its fine sporting history and tradions, is certain to embrace the Games with huge interest and excitement.
The Commonwealth Games vision – encompassing the values of humanity, equality and destiny – is shared by the vast majority of Scots. Add to this a sense of fair play and a genuine desire to show that Scotland welcomes one and all to the “Friendly Games”.
Scotland also has a worthy track record of staging major international events – from the British Open golf championships, the UEFA Champions League Final and to some of the country’s biggest rock and cultural events and festivals.
This is the third time that Scotland has been chosen to host the Games. The first time was in 1970 when the Commonwealth Games were held in Edinburgh.
This was a very successful event which galvanised Scots, attracting large crowds, and showed that Scotland was capable of staging world-class athletic events. Then in 1986, Edinburgh was given the honour of hosting the Games once again.
Now it is Glasgow’s turn and everyone can expect a showpiece that will reflect Glasgow’s stature as a modern and dynamic international city. A city with style.
