Queen’s Baton Relay Facts

EVER SINCE CARDIFF HELD THE COMMONWEALTH GAMES IN 1958, THE QUEEN’S BATON RELAY HAS BEEN A MUCH-CELEBRATED OPENING TRADITION OF THE GAMES. THE QUEEN’S BATON CONTAINS HER MAJESTY’S ‘MESSAGE TO THE ATHLETES’ AND IS SYMBOLICALLY CARRIED FROM BUCKINGHAM PALACE ACROSS THE COUNTRIES OF THE COMMONWEALTH.

THE RELAY WILL COVER 190,000KM. THAT’S THE EQUIVALENT OF GOING AROUND THE EARTH’S SURFACE ALMOST 4.25 TIMES.

VARIOUS MODES OF TRANSPORT WILL BE USED TO COVER THAT DISTANCE:

ever since cardiff held the commonwealth games in 1958,the queen’s baton relay has been a much-celebrated opening tradition of the games. the queen’s baton contains her majesty’s ‘message to the athletes’ and is symbolically carried from buckingham palace across the countries of the commonwealth.

the relay will cover 190,000km. that’s the equivalent of going around the earth’s surface almost 4.25 times.

from canada, the world’s second largest country, to nauru in the pacific ocean, the world’s smallest republic – the baton will cover a diverse range of countries and climates.
