Key Stakeholders

The Scottish Government – the host government and main funder of the Games – is based in Edinburgh. Scotland is part of the United Kingdom but has a devolved Government. It is responsible for most of the issues of day-to-day concern to the people of Scotland, including health, education, justice, rural affairs, and transport. The Scottish Government managed an annual budget of more than £30 billion in 2007-2008.

The Government was known as the Scottish Executive when it was established in 1999 following the first elections to the Scottish Parliament. The current administration was formed after elections in May 2007.

Glasgow City Council, representing the host city and provider of the infrastructure, is based in George Square. The Council is democratically elected by the people of Glasgow and develops its policies for service delivery, which are managed by committees and sub-committees. Following the elections in May 2007, Glasgow City Council comprises 79 elected Members, representing 21 multi-member wards members. The current political make-up of the Council is 46 Labour, 21 Scottish National Party, five Liberal Democrats, five Scottish Green Party, one Conservative and one Independent.

Commonwealth Games Scotland is the host of the Glasgow 2014 Games. The organisation, which incorporates the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland, is the national sporting organisation charged with entering a Scottish team in the Commonwealth Games and Commonwealth Youth Games every two years along with 71 other Commonwealth countries, territories and dependencies. The Commonwealth Games is the only multi-sport event in which Scotland competes as Scotland. Membership of the Games Council consists of representatives of 26 sports in the Commonwealth Games programme from which the host city selects up to 17 sports for each Games.
