the road to sri lanka – Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games

On November the 9th the Commonwealth Games Federation will meet for their General Assembly in Colombo, Sri Lanka. At around 6pm local time, delegates from all 71 countries and territories in the Commonwealth will vote on whether Scotland or Nigeria are to host the Games in 2014. After years of preparation and planning, all our efforts will come down to this final vote.

We have been busy preparing for Sri Lanka over the past few months, and our team are getting ready for the incredibly important opportunity we have at the General Assembly to talk to all the delegates one last time.

So what happens in Sri Lanka? The General Assembly is being hosted this year by Sri Lanka, and their National Olympic Committee have already been very helpful in helping Glasgow 2014 prepare for decision day. On Wednesday 7th November we kick off our part in the activities with a night of entertainment for the delegates, and on Thursday the business of the Assembly begins with the Opening Ceremony. On Friday November 9th most of the business of the Assembly takes place – including the vote on which city is to host the Games in 2014. Both Glasgow and Abuja will make a 30-minute presentation to the delegates and there will be ten minutes of questions and answers before the vote.

Of course, it isn’t just the vote that is important! The CGF General Assembly has a full programme of business over the three day meeting, and the decision about the 2014 Commonwealth Games is only a small part of that.

Planning for Sri Lanka has been fun! As well as deciding what uniforms our team will wear, Scotland has the opportunity to show everyone a slice of Scottish culture with our themed entertainment evening, featuring some of the best in Scottish music.

Teams from Glasgow City Council, the Scottish Government and the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland will be working together in Sri Lanka to make sure that for one last time we present a clear and exciting vision of how we see the XXth Commonwealth Games being staged in Glasgow in 2014.
