Sir Robert Smith
Sir Robert Smith is one of Scotland’s leading business figures. He was appointed as Chair of the OC in February 2008.
Sir Robert is Chairman for The Weir Group plc, former CEO of Morgan Grenfell Private Equity and BBC Governor and Chairman for the Broadcasting Council for Scotland. A chartered accountant, and Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Scotland, Sir Robert has had a long career in finance and the arts. He was knighted in 1999 for his services to the National Museums of Scotland, and holds honorary degrees from the universities of Edinburgh (1999), Glasgow (2001) and Paisley (2003). He is a member of the Council of Economic Advisors to the First Minister of Scotland and chaired The Smith Group, which studied opportunity pathways for young people not in education, employment or training.
Speaking about Sir Robert’s appointment to Glasgow 2014, First Minister Alex Salmond said: “Sir Robert will bring a tremendous amount of experience and expertise to this hugely important role, as the leading individual responsible for turning Scotland’s Commonwealth Games dream into reality.
“He has a proven track record which I know will be essential for delivering an event which promises to be not only the best ever Commonwealth Games but the greatest sporting showcase our country has ever seen.”
John Scott
John Scott will come into post as Chief Executive of the Organising Company of Glasgow 2014 on August 4th 2008.
He is currently the International Director and Director of Drug Free Sport at UK Sport where he is responsible for major events, international relations and leads the UK national anti-doping organisation.
His first involvement in major sport event management came in the 1980s when he was seconded to the Federal Government of Canada to set up a new division managing the governments’ support for major events and international development. He led the Canadian governments’ investment in the Victoria Commonwealth Games (1994) and was a member of the bid committee for Canada’s successful bid to host the 1999 Winnipeg Pan American Games.
He was heavily involved in the Federal Inquiry into doping in sport following Ben Johnson’s positive drug test at the 1988 Seoul Olympic Games.
In 1999 he established the highly successful World Class Events Programme for UK Sport, which uses Lottery money to bring major sporting events to the UK and has so far delivered over 120 events across the whole of the UK. He has led the development of a number of evaluation tools for major events including an economic impact model that has become an industry standard, used to assess over 40 events in the UK, including several in Scotland.
He was a Board member of the highly successful 2002 Manchester Commonwealth Games and the 1994 Victoria Commonwealth Games, and a special adviser to the government on the feasibility study for the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games bid. He has attended six Commonwealth and six Olympic Games in various capacities.
John has also served on numerous international committees and working groups for organisations such as the IOC, UNDP, UNESCO and the Commonwealth Secretariat, and was the Chairman of the Council of Europe Committee for the Development of Sport. He was the UK representative on the Commonwealth Advisory Committee on Sport for 5 years. He is currently Vice President of the Association of National Anti Doping Organisations.
THE BID TEAM
Derek Casey, Bid Director
Derek is the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games Bid Director. Responsible for co-ordinating all the efforts behind the city’s drive to win the Games, Derek brings to the role years of experience in sport and sports development in Scotland, the UK and around the world.
Formerly the Chief Executive of the UK Sports Council and Sport England, Derek had responsibility for the establishment and bedding in of the Sports Lottery Fund in the UK. At its peak the annual income for the Fund was of the order of £300-350m. Leading up to the Sydney Olympics and the Manchester Commonwealth Games, Derek oversaw the development of the World Class Support Programmes (Performance, Potential and Start) for English and British sportsmen and sportswomen. This included personalised funding and support in the fields of sports medicine, science and coaching.
Derek has held numerous international offices. Among others, Derek has been the Chair of the Council of Europe’s Committee for the Development of Sport, a member of the IOC’s Anti-doping Committee and the Co-Chair of the International Working Group on Drug Abuse in Sport. He is adviser on sports development in several countries, particularly in Africa and Eastern Europe.
He is the Chair of the World Leisure Organisation, a member of the Executive Committee for the 2006 World Leisure Expo in Hangzhou, China, and a member of the Executive Committee for the World Leisure Congress in Quebec 2008 and Korea 2010.
Louise Martin, Chair of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland
Louise Martin is Chair of the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland. Louise has a long and ongoing association with the Games as a competitor, team manager, and an administrator.
Competing in the 1962 Commonwealth Games in Perth, Australia, Louise made the swimming finals in 100m and 200m backstroke. A former President of Scottish Gymnastics, whom she represented on the Scottish Commonwealth Games Council, Louise was also the Gymnastics Team Manager at the 1994 Commonwealth Games in Victoria, Canada, and Scottish deputy General Team Manager in Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia 4 years later.
Louise was first elected as a Board member to the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland (CGCS) in 1995 and has been CGCS Chairman since 1999. The first woman to hold this post on the CGCS, she is also currently the Commonwealth Games Federation Honorary Secretary, being first appointed in re-elected for a second term in November 2003.
In 2003 Louise was awarded the CBE in the New Year’s Honours List for services to the Commonwealth Games.
AS CGCS Chairman Louise is a member of the Glasgow 2014 Executive Board and has led the development of the Scottish bid since its inception by the CGCS in 2004.
Lynne McPhee, Depute Bid Director and Head of Marketing
Lynne McPhee is the Head of Marketing and Depute Bid Director for Glasgow 2014.
Having studied in Glasgow between 1984 and 1989 and achieving a BA in Commerce and and MSc in Marketing. She worked for both Motherwell and Cunningham District Councils in business and leisure marketing up till 1994 when she joined Glasgow City Council.
Since 1994 Lynne has focused on her main loves – sport, marketing and events – and has worked on some of Glasgow’s most prestigious projects in the last 12 years. Just over 2 years ago she was seconded to Glasgow’s 2014 Commonwealth Games Bid which she now happily admits to it being her “ideal job”.
In the last year she has played a key role in the marketing of the 2014 Bid. A mad sports enthusiast and qualified fitness instructor, Lynne is married with one son.
Jon Doig, Chief Executive, the Commonwealth Games Council for Scotland
With a professional background in performance sport, Jon Doig has been Chief Executive of the Games Council since May 2001 managing the preparation of all Scotland’s Games Teams over this time. He has been involved with the CGCS since 1996 acting as technical advisor to the CGCS prior to, and at, the 1998 Kuala Lumpur Games where he was an Assistant General Team Manager to the Scottish Team. In 2002 in Manchester he was also Assistant General Team Manager, and in 2006 in Melbourne he was Scotland’s General Team Manager.
Jon’s multi sport Games experience also includes senior Games management roles at two World University Games. In his capacity as CGCS CEO, Jon has contributed to the CGCS development of the Bid since its inception, is a member of the Glasgow 2014 Bid Executive Board, and chaired the group responsible for developing the Glasgow 2014 Sports Programme.
Rob Shorthouse, Head of PR and Media
Rob heads up the media team that delivers all of Glasgow 2014’s media and public relations operations. The official spokesman for the Bid, Rob works directly with the media in Scotland and around the Commonwealth to keep them up to date with the progress of the Bid and Scotland’s plans for 2014.
