Public Transport

Spectators are encouraged to use public transport, particularly for longer journeys as they make their way to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games.

Using Your Event Ticket in the Games Zone

Your event ticket allows you to use public transport services within a predefined area when travelling to and from your event. The coverage of the ‘Games Zone’ varies, depending on the location of the event you are travelling to, as detailed below.

Venues within Glasgow

If you are travelling to an event which takes place in Glasgow, the Games Zone covers access to ScotRail services, Subway services and the majority of local bus services within the SPT ZoneCard area G1–G8 of the Glasgow public transport network. Participating bus operators within Zone G are:

Royal Commonwealth Pool, Edinburgh

The Edinburgh Games Zone includes access to local bus services in Travelarea 1 of the One Ticket scheme.

Barry Buddon Shooting Centre, Carnoustie

The Carnoustie Games Zone includes access to ScotRail services between Dundee and Arbroath and Stagecoach Strathtay Number 73 bus service between Dundee and Arbroath.

Shuttle buses

A series of shuttle buses will run from the city centre to Celtic Park, Hampden Park, Ibrox and Cathkin Braes. For further details, please refer to the Essential Venue Guide for each venue. You can plan all of your public transport journeys using the Traveline Journey Planner App.

Subway services

SPT’s Subway is the easiest way to get around the city centre and west end of Glasgow. It takes just 24 minutes to complete a full circuit of all 15 stations. Games venues and Festival 2014 sites that can be reached by Subway are:

Bus services

All of the venues in Glasgow are served by public bus services, though the frequency and journey times vary. For venue-specific bus services, please check the relevant venue pages.

Longer Distance Coach Services

Travelling longer distances by bus from the north of Scotland

First Bus offers some regional services from northern towns such as Stirling and Dunblane to Glasgow. National Express coaches run from Perth and Aberdeen to Glasgow’s Buchanan Bus Station.

Stagecoach-owned Megabus also provides services to Glasgow from destinations like Dundee and Inverness in the north and Campbeltown in Argyll. (This is run by West Coast Motors in conjunction with Scottish Citylink).

Scottish Citylink provides services to Glasgow’s Buchanan Bus Station from a number of locations in the north of Scotland e.g. Oban, Fort William, Skye and Scrabster, Inverness, Dundee and Aberdeen.

Travelling longer distances by bus from the South of Scotland

First Bus provides a bus link from the Scottish Border towns such as Galashiels and Peebles to Edinburgh.

Scottish Citylink offers a direct bus services from Stranraer in the South West of Scotland to Glasgow.

Stagecoach offers coach services from Stranraer in the South West of Scotland to Glasgow via Ayr.

First Bus, Scottish Citylink and National Express all offer direct bus services from the east of Scotland to Glasgow. All provide a direct service from Edinburgh and Scottish Citylink also stops at Harthill in North Lanarkshire (and Baillieston).

Travelling longer distances by bus from the east of Scotland

First Bus, Megabus, Scottish Citylink, and National Express all offer direct bus services from the east of Scotland to Glasgow. All provide a direct service from Edinburgh and Scottish Citylink also stops at Harthill in North Lanarkshire (and Baillieston).

First Bus offers several services from towns such as Falkirk in the east of Scotland to Glasgow.

Megabus will run extended services from Edinburgh, Dundee and Stirling during the Games.

Stagecoach provides an express service to Glasgow from towns in Fife including St Andrews, Leven and Kircaldy. The service runs via Dunfermline and Cumbernauld bus stations en route to Glasgow.

Travelling longer distances by bus from the west of Scotland

McGills provides coach services from Greenock to Glasgow. Stagecoach provides direct services from Kilmarnock and Ayr to Glasgow while McGills provides a service from Gourock and serves Renfrewshire, Inverclyde, East Renfrewshire and West Dunbartonshire with direct links to Glasgow from Largs, Gourock, Greenock, Barrhead, Helensburgh and Alexandria. Stagecoach will run extra services from Ayrshire during the Games.
