ScotRail has announced that it will provide additional late – night rail services during the Games to:
Airdrie, Ardrossan, Ayr, Balloch, Barrhead, Cumbernauld, Dalmuir, Dumbarton, Dunblane, East Kilbride, Edinburgh, Falkirk, Gourock, Hamilton, Helensburgh, Kilmarnock, Lanark, Largs, Larkhall, Milngavie, Motherwell, Neilston, Newton, Paisley, Perth, Stirling and Wemyss Bay.
Other rail operators are currently finalising their plans for services during the Games, and further information will be provided here as soon as available.
The two main railway hubs serving the city are Glasgow Central Station and Glasgow Queen Street Station. The West Coast Main Line terminates at Glasgow Central Station, linking Glasgow to London Euston along the west coast of mainland Scotland and England via Preston, Carlisle and Motherwell.
There is currently a direct service to Glasgow Central Station from London Euston every 40 minutes, including an overnight sleeper service operated by ScotRail. There are now direct rail links between Birmingham and Glasgow Central Station running every two hours.
Glasgow Queen Street station also links to the East Coast Main Line via Edinburgh. The East Coast Main Line runs from Edinburgh to London Kings Cross via Newcastle, York and Leeds.
Virgin Trains provides the west coast service. ScotRail runs the sleeper service on the West Coast Main Line from London Euston.
Cross Country Trains and East Coast Trains provide the east coast service. East coast trains terminate at Edinburgh Waverley Station. Travel to Glasgow Queen Street Station from Edinburgh Waverly Station normally takes approximately 50 minutes and the services run very regularly.
Travelling by rail from the north of Scotland
Rail services from Glasgow Queen Street Station serve cities in the north of Scotland such as Inverness, Aberdeen, Dundee and Perth. Services also operate to and from Oban to Fort William the north west of Scotland. Ferry services to the Inner and Outer Hebrides run from these towns.
Travelling by rail from the South of Scotland
The west coast mainline terminates at Glasgow Central Station, linking Glasgow to London Euston along the west coast of mainland Scotland and England via Preston, Carlisle and Motherwell. There is at present a direct service to Glasgow Central Station from London Euston every 40 minutes. Glasgow Queen Street Station also links to the east coast mainline via Edinburgh. The East Coast mainline travels from Edinburgh to London Kings Cross via Newcastle, York and Leeds.
Travelling by rail from the east of Scotland
Glasgow Queen Street Station provides the main rail link between Glasgow and Edinburgh. There are approximately eight direct services per hour at present, with plans for these to increase to 13 by 2014.
There is also a limited service between Edinburgh and Glasgow Central Station. Edinburgh serves the East Coast Main Line for services from London Kings Cross via Newcastle, York and Leeds, checking the East Coast Trains site is worthwhile. ScotRail has announced it will be providing additional late night services to Edinburgh, Falkirk and Airdrie.
Travelling by rail from the west of Scotland
Glasgow Central Station is the main rail interchange for the west of Scotland with four services an hour to Ayr as well as services to Kilmarnock and towns with ferry terminals such as Ardrossan, Largs, Troon and Dunoon. Glasgow Central Station also links directly to Prestwick Airport. ScotRail has announced that it will be providing additional late night services to Ayr, Kilmarnock, Largs, Wemyss Bay and Gourock.
