One of the benefits of hosting the Commonwealth Games is to leave the host city with a lasting legacy of improved infrastructure that is both positive and sustainable. That is clearly one of the aims of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. While the basis of Glasgow’s bid was to use as many of the city’s top level sporting facilities as possible, some new buildings are required.
The major construction work is at Dalmarnock, on the East side, where the Commonwealth Games Village will be built. Work has begun clearing an area which is in need of regeneration. The Village will be the hub for the athletes and officials for the duration of the Games, but afterwards the accommodation will be used for permanent low-cost housing for people in Glasgow. This includes plans for 300 social housing units and a 120-bed care home.
The economic benefits of the Games will be to generate an estimated 1,200 jobs, with 1,000 of these in Glasgow. An increase in tourists will also generate many millions to the Scottish economy.
