As the host nation, Scotland will be keen to perform well at the Games. The country’s leading sports people will be aiming for a record haul of gold, silver and bronze medals. But the Scottish Government’s ambition is that real legacy will be the creation of a country where the population is fitter and healthier and able to use sport to reach personal goals and ambitions.
Glasgow will be adorned with a number of new or expanded facilities, which will help secure this long-term ambition for the country. For the Games, Scotland will have a new National Indoor Sports Arena; a new indoor velodrome, the first of its kind in Scotland; a mountain bike centre, a new 12,500-seater entertainments arena on the site of the existing Scottish Exhibition and Conference Centre for gymnastics and netball, and an international hockey complex at Glasgow Green.
Coupled with this will be improvements in the public transport system. All of these projects will bring jobs to the city and become part of the Commonwealth Games’ lasting legacy in Scotland.
